We base our evaluation of ADHD problems on the current DSM-5 Manual (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), to identify the degree to which the individual’s symptoms, distress, and life impairment matches the known problem areas associated with ADHD Inattention and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity problems.
Testing Approach. We use a multi-method, multi-informant approach to gather information from various “method types” (such as questionnaire, computer-performance, interviews, cognitive performance tasks), as well as from various “informant types” (such as from the child, parents, and teachers in the case of children, and from the adult client, and spouse in the case of adult clients, when appropriate and relevant).
Benefits of ADHD Evaluations. Depending on your situation, obtaining a thorough ADHD evaluations may be associated with the following benefits:
- Informing and Clarifying Your Treatment Options. If we identify that inattention and/or hyperactivity is a major problem area for you, the scientific research supports the use of either medication or Behavioral Therapy to learn how to manage executive functioning deficits. Obtaining an evaluation will thus help inform whether these Treatment Options are right for you or your child.
- Testing Accommodations. Testing Accommodations with Standardized Testing Boards (such as Extended Time, Separate Rooms free from distractions, etc.) may be offered to you.
- Increasing Confidence in Diagnosis From Psychiatrist Prior to Taking Medication. Getting increased confidence that you have ADHD prior to taking ADHD Medication from a Medical Psychiatrist is important for many people prior to starting medication.
- Re-Assess Current Status. It is often helpful to re-assess your current status, especially after taking ADHD Medication and/or receiving Behavioral Intervention to learn how to better manage the challenges associated with ADHD Inattention and Hyperactivity.
