Jiyoon Kim, M.S., is a U.S. Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois. She was born in Seoul, Korea and raised in different parts of the United States, and she completed her master’s degree at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago.

Biography

Jiyoon was born in Seoul, Korea, and later moved to the United States, living across different states including, California, Wisconsin, Indiana, West Virginia, and Illinois. Due to this upbringing, Jiyoon identifies as Korean-American. Fluent in English and conversational in Korean, Jiyoon brings a unique cultural perspective to her work.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Loyola University of Chicago and later pursued her Master of Science in Clinical Counseling at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago. Her internship at AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital provided her with extensive training in working with a wide range of populations (childhood to adulthood), particularly those with neuropsychological and developmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, often in conjunction with depression and anxiety.

Throughout her career, Jiyoon has shown a commitment to serving individuals from diverse backgrounds, including various cultural, national, and ethnic groups, as well as clients of different sexual orientations, religions, and socioeconomic statuses. She has experience working with both adult and child/adolescent clients, adapting her approach to meet the diverse needs of each population group.

Following her training Jiyoon gained additional clinical experience in English-speaking counseling centers in Korea, providing individual and group therapy services, primarily focusing on diverse age groups spanning from early adulthood to young adulthood.

Therapy Approach

As a dedicated therapist, my foundational training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) forms the core of my counseling approach. I specialize in client-centered play therapy, facilitating self-expression, emotional processing, and problem-solving skills in a dynamic and engaging manner, particularly beneficial for younger clients.

Recognizing that each individual is unique, I emphasize a tailored approach in therapy, aligning with the specific goals, needs, and personal circumstances of my clients. I advocate for person-first language, underscoring the concept that any disorder, condition, or disability is only one aspect of a person’s complex identity.

While my official training has been in CBT and behavioral therapy, I continue to apply myself to learn about other therapeutic techniques, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), through certified courses and professional development programs. This continuous learning ensures that I can offer a wide range of effective, evidence-based therapies to meet the diverse needs of my clients.

My professional growth is driven by the belief that there is always room for improvement and learning. By staying up to date with the latest developments in therapy and mental health care, I can provide the highest quality of care and support. Each session is an opportunity to apply this philosophy, offering compassionate and effective therapy to those who seek my help.
