Biography

Joanna is a U.S. board-certified music therapist and a licensed professional counselor. She earned her M.S.Ed in Counseling and Mental Health Services and M.Phil.Ed in Professional Counseling from University of Pennsylvania and her B.M degree in Music Therapy from Temple University. Her professional experiences include working with addiction/substance abuse populations from both inpatient and outpatient settings, with children and adolescents of various diagnoses such as ADHD, selective mutism, and mood disorders, and with adults of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Therapy Approach

By using a psychodynamic approach, I help clients identify recurring patterns in their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs and gain insight into their current lives and early life experiences. I also combine interventions from cognitive behavioral therapy to challenge clients’ distortions in thinking and help them learn skills to reduce anxiety, depression, and many other psychological difficulties.

When working with children, I also utilize my music therapy background to create bonds and access deeper communication tools.

I have witnessed my clients having made extraordinarily deep and incredible changes to intractable issues they never imagined overcoming when they were fully heard, supported, and validated. I hope to continue helping clients connect the dots of their lives, become accepting of themselves, and lead healthier lives by providing a caring heart and applying my professional experience.

Fun Facts

I was prom queen in high school, which shows that I was pretty outgoing and extroverted in my earlier years. However, I've become more reserved with time and therefore have both introverted and extroverted sides. And depending on who I meet, different parts come out.
