Biography

Dr. Sooin Lee, Psy.D., originally from Seoul, South Korea, is a Clinical Psychologist trained in the United States, who brings over a decade of experience in mental health to her practice. Her passion lies in contextualizing human suffering through an existential lens, aiming to understand psychiatric symptoms and guide individuals towards authentic living as well as resilience. Dr. Lee firmly believes that humans possess an inherent capacity to heal and thrive autonomously when provided with the appropriate environment, a condition facilitated by the therapeutic process.

Dr. Lee earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Chicago, IL, accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), specializing in existential psychology. She also holds a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Wheaton College Graduate School, Wheaton, IL, integrating spirituality into her approach. With a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea, she understands the physiological basis of emotional distress. Her research interests include the effectiveness of existential approaches, the use of psychotherapy for acute cases, and exploring diversity as a context for symptoms. Dr. Lee is deeply passionate about providing supervision to educate and mentor the next generation of mental health professionals.

Therapy Approach

Grounded in existential principles, I prioritize the quest for meaning and purpose amidst life’s challenges, believing in each person’s inherent capacity for growth in the face of adversity.

Encountering suffering often serves as a gateway to reconnecting with one’s authenticity and potential, fostering a sense of empowerment. Therefore, my foremost goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can delve into their innermost thoughts and emotions.

Clients then tap into their innate resources, which are typically embedded in bodily wisdom, metaphoric language, and intuition, in pursuit of healing and a more fulfilling life. This process thus involves nonverbal and internal reflection, enabling individuals to experientially tune into their underlying values and strengths, leading to transformative growth. In tailoring my approach to individual needs, I integrate neuroscience-based interventions such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), somatic awareness, hypnosis, and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback into my psychotherapy practice.

Psychotherapy is an intimate and personal journey of self-discovery and growth. I see my role as a facilitator, guiding clients through this profound exploration to make sense of their suffering and transcend it so that each client is empowered to make deliberate choices about the path forward.
