Biography

Dr. Joo Hwan Shin, Psy.D. completed his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology at the APA-accredited Clinical Program at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University. Formerly, he worked as a licensed clinical psychologist and clinical instructor at NYU Psychiatry Associates/NYU Grossman School of Medicine in Manhattan, NY. He also completed his post-doctoral fellowship at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and his doctoral internship at Jacobi Medical Center in Bronx, NY.

Dr. Joo Hwan Shin has dedicated himself to providing quality mental healthcare to a culturally diverse population. He has developed a keen sensitivity to cultural diversity and an aspiration to be a psychotherapist who can incorporate different cultures into Western Psychotherapy to serve more diverse clients from across the world. His passion for multiculturalism and advocating for the rights of culturally marginalized groups is reflected in his dissertation research, which pertains to immigration and acculturation.

Dr. Joo Hwan Shin has developed special clinical interest in trauma. He has conducted
psychodiagnostics interviews with asylum seekers for two years at the Parnes Community Mental Health Clinic and the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. Additionally, he developed sub-specialty in crisis intervention through working with patients at the CPEP/inpatient unit at Jacobi as well as students with acute depression and suicidality at Pratt Institute.

Therapy Approach

I primarily use psychodynamic/psychoanalytic approach and incorporate other theoretical domains (i.e., CBT, DBT) to serve the clients’ diverse needs. I encourage clients to identify their perpetuating relationship patterns that might arise in their relationship with me. Such patterns provide a comprehensive snapshot of their unconscious struggles and resistances to change as well as a decisive clue about what their missing relational needs are to initiate changes.

I understand that the pathology could be, in fact, a product of clients’ solution to deal with their troubling environment, that was once, but no longer effective. I pay special attention to emotion, as clients’ behaviors might be unconsciously driven from their pursuit and escape from certain emotions. Their conscious ability to make sound and flexible judgments of reality might be largely limited if their emotions are left unprocessed. I have seen their understanding and appreciation of themselves grow as they slowly regained their courage to identify their feelings. Such process liberated them to clarify their desire and create circumstances to restore and cultivate their authenticity and originality.

I understand that the work requires courage, patience, and sustained curiosity. I offer space and time for a safe, trustful relationship to be built, as it enables clients to share their experiences and gain access to their feelings. Healing seems to occur when their experiences are witnessed, validated, and empathically listened to.
