Biography
Hyejin, originally from Incheon, Korea, fulfilled her teenage dream of studying abroad by moving to Seattle, Washington, where she graduated from the University of Washington. Inspired by the various mental health needs among immigrants, underrepresented populations, multicultural issues, and the lack of professional mental health providers in Korea, she was led to pursue her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Biola University’s Rosemead School of Psychology. Hyejin’s clinical training spans diverse settings, including university counseling centers, community mental health centers, and private practice in California and Indiana.
With a focus on adult and adolescent clients, as well as couples from various sociocultural backgrounds, Hyejin provides psychotherapy for issues ranging from depression, anxiety, and mood disorders to personality disorders, relational difficulties, trauma, and addiction. Her expertise extends to addressing concerns related to cultural identities and faith/spiritual matters, reflecting a comprehensive approach to mental health.
Therapy Approach
I advocate the belief that human beings are fundamentally relational. From birth through the entirety of our lives, we innately and consistently seek interaction and connection with others. These relational experiences significantly shape and influence the way we relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us. Beyond interpersonal dynamics, various factors such as social, cultural, physiological, and spiritual factors intricately shape each individual’s sense of self, worldview, values, beliefs, and biases in complex ways.
Recognizing the intricacies of human experience, my therapeutic approach centers on the understanding that each person is embedded in a unique context. Psychotherapy, in my view, is a collaborative and safe space created within the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client. Within this space, clients are encouraged to examine and reflect on various aspects of their experiences with curiosity, building the capacity to tolerate discomfort while gaining new and corrective experiences. This experience will facilitate personal growth and lasting changes in important areas of their lives.
I primarily employ object relations, psychodynamic, and insight-oriented approaches, supplemented by elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Time-Limited Dynamic Therapy, trauma-informed interventions, and attachment theory, tailoring my methods to meet the specific needs of each client.
